She is best known for portraying Tiana Disney's first princess of African descent as seen in The Princess and the Frog (2009). The film was named a Disney Legend in 2011. Her other starring role, as Lorrell Robinson, on the show Dreamgirls (2007) which has been nominated to win an Academy Award. And she is the jukebox player LaVerne Ganner on the show Starz's Power. She has also been recognized for her performances in the theatre, including her leading roles on the stage in Caroline or Change (2004) on Broadway for which she received the Tony Award was won for Best actor in musical.
